I Hate Cardio

Okay maybe it’s just that Love / Hate relationship but certainly it’s not one of those workouts that I’m thinking of the night before and just jumping at the chance the next day to start. You don’t agree? Well maybe you’re not giving yourself the intensive cardio workout that your body is needing.
On a scale of 1 to 10 during your workout, what level would you say you are at if 10 is you can’t hardly breath and feel like you’re going to puke and 5 is pretty much just ho, hum?
So, these workouts typically aren’t fun for me. And running, come on people, what’s up with that? I hate it! Did I just put an exclamation mark at the end of that sentence? I did! I just can’t help it!!! Breathing hard, legs burning and your chest feeling like it’s about to explode. Who loves that?
Now some of the cardio that I do is intense I have to admit. It’s not for your average Joe, but really anyone with a desire and commitment can do it. Take Insanity for example. This program is aptly named because it truly is an INSANE workout. Jumping, squatting, hopping around, up and down, plyo this, push up this, jeesh you would have thought I was back in boot camp, only 100 times worse.
But here’s a couple of good thoughts from my dear friend Tony Horton (check him out in the video below). “You’re only good at the things you do often and you become great if work at the things you struggle with most”. And I also agree with him that I don’t really enjoy these workouts but they’re important and I do them anyway!
So I’ve rambled on a bit about why I hate cardio. But it is the one thing my body, my heart and my mind crave. If I don’t feed them this particular thing, then they all will fall into a state of disrepair and unfortunately the worse that can happen is that my heart decides it’s the weak kid on the block and gives me grief for it.
You all know deep down that the easy low intense cardio that you’ve been doing isreally not helping you to burn fat. That is one of the goals of doing cardio. Studies have shown that high-intensity training and especially when combined with an interval workout can burn up to 9 times the amount of fat as other cardio workouts. Further enhance this fat loss by doing them in the morning on an empty stomach and you’ll have the effects of the workout throughout the day to help burn fat.
So the morale of the story here is to “Do It Anyway”. Regardless if it’s a little or a lot, just do it! And if you need some motivating, shoot me an email and I’ll love to partner with you in your success.

Hi Bill,
Right now, the only thing I do is running! So I actually love it
But, in the past when I used to go to the gym to lift weights, I also hated cardio, lol…
It wasn’t as exciting as the weights.
But, over time, it’s changed. Hopefully I’ll get back to the gym to life weights again in the future.
Thanks
Gavin
Gavin me, too. I love running. I mean love, love, love. And I run without headphones. Just me and my breathing. I swear it’s like a spiritual experience, too. I watch my heartrate and focus on my breathing.
And I’m not just jogging. I complete in half marathons, 10ks, 5ks and even some small triathlons. Hate biking, swimming is ok.
Bill, Love weight lifting, but haven’t yet been able to trick my brain into loving cardio…still working on that…..
You can sign me up in the “i Hate Cardio” club as well..
But, you are so right…do it anyway is the frame of mind it takes. The benefits outweigh the discomfort. (Did I really just say that? LOL)……
Thanks for sharing (and for sending out the accompanying guilt as I read along)….. Time to toss off the excuses and hit the treadmill again…..
Have an awesome day,
Robin
Hi Bill,
The timing of reading your post could not have been better…with the busy summer, I took a couple of months off from my gym (and personal trainer) and boy, I had no idea what a struggle it was going to be for me to workout…it’s amazing to me how much I’ve gotten back out of shape in just seven/eight weeks time. One of the things that I’ve always struggled with is add cardio to my workout’s…yet once I get going, like you noted too, I get pretty intense…just tough sometimes to get motivated to do what I know I need to for my body. I especially liked the quote you shared from Tony Horton (excellent!)

Bill,
I feel ya! Back when I started getting back into shape last November, I remembering posting on Facebook over and over, “when will cardio not suck?” Back then I was doing five days/week for an hour/day and it worked as I lost 40 pounds and have kept it off since March. Now I “just” do 3-4 days of cardio, 35 minutes/day plus yoga and light weights.
But the thing was/is, the repetition and the self-mastery. Can’t say that I look forward to it, but I’m always glad to be doing my HIIT while I’m doing it. And during half of it I’m listening to teleseminars, etc. and the other half to loud, rocking music. So I’m grateful to be doing it and of course, as you say it IS the one true exercise that we need to stay healthy, all vanity aside.
Thanks for sharing,
Adam
Hey Bill
I hate cardio too
But I do enjoy walking, not slow walking, but at a good pace to work up a sweat.
I can think back to my football years with all of the puking and I definitely do not miss it.

Hi, Bill
I use to run every Sunday back in time. but now that i am working on the night shift i just don’t know how to schedule my time anymore. I should get quickly back to work before anything goes wrong with my body. I do love running though, it’s one of my favorite exercises.
Thanks for sharing,
Loic
HI Bill,
I have a love/hate relationship with cardio. I hate to do it but love the results.
My wife and I enjoy walking in our development and for the first time in a long
time, we had the opportunity to do our walk while BOTH of our kids were in
school.
We decided to do an interval training of about 4 miles of running and walking, up
and downs the hills of our development.
It was unreal, one of the best workouts ever, my whole body hurt for days. I do
try to walk at least once a week. As a football coach for my 5 year old’s flag
football team, I do participate in their run every practice.
Have a great day Bill!
Tommy D.
Hi Bill,
You brought back some old memories for me when I was a runner. Do a lot of walking now but the high I would get after a very invigorating run was incredible. You know what, I might consider getting back into it again.
Thanks for the reminder,
Michael
We have an elliptical and a stairmaster in our home, and we are fitness professional by trade, so there is no excuse. My wife and I do it everyday. If it wasn’t for reading during it, I’d probably shoot myself, but all in all, I get it in, and don’t give myself a chance to “self-talk” out of it. Just get it done!
Regards,
Mike
I never liked cardio until I started doing step aerobics, and then I loved it. Can’t do it any more, but I still try to do what I can – stretching and yoga and a little walking. I think you have great advice on keeping fit. “Do It Anyway” is a good motto for just about anything we need to do but don’t want to!
Wishing you a song in your heart (and some aerobic conditioning, too)
Leslie
Hey Bill…you know I kind of have that love/hate relationship with intense cardio. I actually have a great love for doing it but only if it has some meaning of an upcoming competition behind it. If there is no competition…I’m really not very interested. I love training for the purpose of competing but I have a difficult time, even though I am super health conscious, of doing cardio just for health purposes. Not sure why that is…but I just simply love competing and I thrive in that atmosphere.
Great Post!
Is there an “I hate Cardio” club? I’d join if there is one but only because the cardio I’ve been used to is running (I know there are those who LOVE it, but I feel awkward and my boobs get in the way!) and the bootcamp stuff we used to do at school.
However, I do love to walk – fast, up hill and down dale – and I can dance for hours.
And there’s no doubt, one’s body is grateful even if the mind complains.
So maybe I should join the “I hate Some Cardio” club!! lol
